What Should an Invoice Include?

Under Indian tax law, a valid GST invoice must include: your GSTIN (if registered), the recipient's GSTIN, a unique consecutive invoice number, the date of issue, a description of goods or services, quantity, unit price, total value, applicable GST rate(s), CGST and SGST or IGST amounts separately, and the place of supply. This generator includes all required fields. For transactions below the GST registration threshold (₹20 lakh turnover for most states), a simplified bill of supply is sufficient.

Invoice Numbering Best Practices

Use a consistent, sequential numbering system for all invoices within a financial year. Common formats: INV-2024-001, FY24-001, or simply sequential numbers resetting each April 1. Sequential invoice numbers are mandatory for GST compliance — gaps in numbering may attract scrutiny during assessments. Maintain a separate invoice register or use accounting software to track issued invoices.

Payment Terms

Standard Indian business payment terms: Net 15 (payment due within 15 days), Net 30 (30 days), or Net 45 (45 days). Add a late payment clause for unpaid invoices — a common practice is 1.5–2% interest per month on overdue amounts. Include your bank details (account number, IFSC code, bank name, branch) directly in the invoice to make payment as convenient as possible. For international clients, add your Swift/BIC code and bank address.
