PDF uses a coordinate system based on points, where 1 point = 1/72 of an inch. If your PDF has mixed page sizes (common in documents with landscape appendices or charts), the per-page table shows each page's individual dimensions.

Every PDF page has dimensions defined in points, where 1 point equals exactly 1/72 of an inch. This unit dates to traditional typesetting, where physical type was measured in points. Standard A4 pages measure 595 × 842 points (210 × 297 mm at 72 DPI). A PDF page can theoretically be any size — from tiny business card dimensions to large-format engineering drawings many metres wide. Mixed-size PDFs are common in documents that include both portrait text pages and landscape charts or appendices.
Page count verification is needed before printing (to calculate paper and ink costs), before submitting documents with page limits (court briefs, grant applications, academic submissions), when billing for document work charged per page, when planning reading time for long documents, and when auditing document completeness after PDF merging or splitting operations. Checking page count before opening a large PDF in a viewer also helps you decide whether to download it at all on a slow connection.
