This tool extracts the text layer from any text-based PDF and counts words, characters, sentences, and pages β giving you the same statistics as our Word Counter tool for plain text. Useful for writers checking document length, students verifying essay requirements, and professionals auditing report word counts.
The tool uses Mozilla's open-source PDF.js library, running entirely in your browser. PDF.js renders each page and extracts its embedded text content. No data is sent to any server β the entire process happens on your device. This makes it safe for confidential documents.
PDFs are used across virtually every professional context β legal contracts, academic dissertations, business reports, government submissions, and publishing manuscripts. Each context has specific word count requirements that must be verified before submission. A legal brief may have a court-imposed page or word limit. A journal submission requires an abstract of exactly 150β250 words and a manuscript within a specified range. A university thesis chapter must fall within departmental guidelines. Manually counting words in a PDF is tedious and error-prone β this tool extracts and counts automatically in seconds.
The reading time estimate uses 200 words per minute β the standard average for adult silent reading of informational or professional text, based on published research in cognitive psychology. For legal or highly technical text, actual reading time may be 30β50% longer. For narrative or light text, readers typically read 20β30% faster. The estimate is a practical guide, not a precise measurement.
The per-page word count breakdown is useful for identifying unbalanced document sections, verifying that each chapter of a multi-chapter document meets minimum length requirements, and spotting pages that are nearly blank (which may indicate formatting errors in the original document). A page showing 0 words is either a blank separator page, a page with only images or diagrams, or a scanned page without a text layer.
PDF word counts sometimes differ slightly from the original Word document count. This is normal β PDF text extraction reconstructs text from a visual layout rather than from the original document structure. Hyphenated words at line breaks, headers and footers, footnotes, table cell content, and text in shapes or callout boxes may be handled differently depending on how the PDF was created.
